BACKGROUND
As newcomers to Birdham Pool in April 2022 we have been down to “0” on the depth sounder a few times in our first year as we work out where the deepest water is along the approach channel. So for 2023 I want a way to stay in the deepest possible water so we can extend the time we can get in and out of the marina with out getting stuck in the mud. So in addition to looking at the channel and posts marking it at low tides I’ve created a series of waypoint to follow by looking at satellite images taken at low tide. Having said that the mud is very soft so its not a problem to get off if you go slowly!
How the waypoints in the downloadable files have been produced
Using the Google Earth with the most recent low tide image the positions shown in red were marked and downloaded as a KML file. This file is a text readable file that contains the Latitude and Longitude of these waypoints.
This KML file was imported in to a program called QMapShack on the Linux PC that I use. This program is similar to Garmin Basecamp on Windows. These coordinates were then output from QmapShack as a GPX route and a GPX track. These files were tested by importing the route file into Navionics Boating App and the track into OSMaps. For some reason neither of these Apps will import the other file which is why I am providing both Route and Track gpx files, as one of them should import into whatever application you are using that is meant to read gpx files.
The Lat/Long coordinates were copied and put in a plain csv file and also put into batch converter on the What3words website (https://what3words.com/products/batch-converter) which converts the Lat/Longs to What3word locations. These were put into a CSV file that can then be directly imported into this application.
UPDATES
If I find any shallower points along this route I will try to update this information and adjust the waypoints and update all the files. I’ll also update the channel photos when I get more at the very lowest tides. If you would like an email notification when this information changes please sign up to updates on the bottom of the Contact page.
Also if you find any of these waypoints need adjusting please contact me with the new position either in Lat/Long or with the What3words name.
I hope Birdham Pool residents and visitors alike will find this site useful.
